About Your Guide

Dave (Smiler) Cuthbertson started his climbing career in 1964. Living in the Midlands he rapidly developed his rock skills on the Peak District's gritstone edges. Progressing to the bigger climbs of North Wales and Scotland , Smiler quickly established himself as a popular and extremely enthusiastic climber.

It was in 1967 that he made his first of many visits to the Alps . The famous climbs of Chamonix , Zermatt and Grindelwald lured him back time and again, climbing with some of the best British alpinists.

After many years of climbing, Smiler underwent the rigorous training to become a IFMGA Guide. Returning regularly to the Alps as a Guide and also for his own enjoyment, Smiler continues to increase his knowledge and experience.

Superb outings are available in the more esoteric corners of the Alps , as well as to the justifiable popular areas. Smiler also climbs extensively in many other parts of the world and is constantly seeking new challenges both for himself and his clients. From the peace and tranquillity of a British mountain walk to trekking and climbing in the majestic Himalaya - the choice is yours.

As a guide, Smiler is genuinely international - as his menu of tours suggests. And, as a climber, he is certainly top drawer with many of the major north faces under his belt, plus expeditions to Mt McKinley and the Himalaya . The Lotus Flower Tower (Canada 's NW Territories), The Nose (El Capitan), Huascaran (Peru), Cotopaxi (Ecuador) are some of his more recent successes. As the years roll by the achievement list grows. Travels in Patagonia , peaks and volcanoes in Chile , Peru and Ecuador , expeditions to Ama Dablam and Aconcagua and still getting up good routes on the Ben.

But most of all, Smiler is an excellent companion. With pure enthusiasm he can instil in clients the desire to succeed. As such, his courses always result in mutual appreciation of climbing abilities and, together with his leadership and comradeship, the time spent in the mountains is always immensely rewarding.
